Saving files to on-line servers is a great way to keep important files safe from pc failures. On-line backup is not a new concept but a number of innovative services are now available which make the whole process simple and cost effective. In fact many providers offer free backup space to get started. We use rsync.net to store off-site secure encrypted backups of database and web files. These are sent to the backup server each evening as part of an automated process using rsync linux commands between servers. Automated backups on your personal computer need not require any technical expertise. Some great services for automating file backups are available and are really worth checking out. Drop Box Dropbox is software that syncs your files online and across your computers. Put your files into your Dropbox folder on one computer, and they'll automatically appear on any of your other computers that also have Dropbox installed (Windows, Mac, and Linux too!). You can even download Dropbox apps for your smartphone or mobile device (iPhone, iPad, Android, and Blackberry). Everything in your Dropbox is available from the Dropbox website, too so you can access files from any internet connected computer using your account details. Take the Dropbox Tour to find out more. Your first 2Gb of space is free!
